Job Summary/Basic Function

Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Senior Director of Marketing is responsible for the extension, management, promotion, and implementation of the University’s brand, image and marketing across multiple platforms. The senior director develops, implements, and executes strategies that expand and enhance the University’s visibility and perceived value, including, but not limited to, message and campaign development for traditional and digital media; social marketing and listening; streaming content (audio and visual) and ad placement; strategic marketing planning and implementation; oversight of key website pages and SEO; an extensive array of electronic and vinyl billboards; print advertisements and promotions; video marketing (including TV, streaming, and digital commercials) and deployment; graphic design and photography services; University printing services; public relations; and partnerships with key stakeholders in the Greater Nashville region. These partnerships include, but are not limited to, WKRN News 2; WMOT; WNPT and WPLN; the Grammys; Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival; EAA AirVenture; Nashville Predators; Nashville Sounds; Nashville SuperSpeedway; Music City Grand Prix; Van Wagner (MTSU Athletics); Civil Air Patrol; Scouting America (formerly Scouts BSA and Boy Scouts of America); Blackman Collegiate Academy; and other local high schools. The senior director identifies and regularly reports budget and performance metrics to the Vice President for Marketing and Communications to track and determine outcomes for all marketing efforts, including social platforms and key pages on our website. The executive also is responsible for the division’s partnership with MTSU’s Information Technology Division over the University’s website,, which requires close collaboration with ITD, Academic Affairs, and the University strategic communicators for updates, upgrades and redesigns to ensure the website puts forward an informative, effective and attractive digital presence. This executive has oversight of directors who manage teams and create and implement marketing actions, including the Art Director (who heads Creative and Visual Services and Blue Print); the Director of Digital Marketing; and the Senior Video Producer.

This position works also as needed with the President, Provost, Vice Presidents and other executive officers at the University, including the vice provosts; deans of the colleges; and center directors, to develop marketing strategies for their units.
The senior director is personally responsible for the design, implementation and deployment of the University’s digital and print billboards, as well as other marketing collateral assigned and required by the Vice President of Marketing and Communications. The senior director will also help coordinate the information flow and cooperation among the strategic communicators operating within each college. This may involve training, particularly in the areas of paid digital advertising, paid search, SEO, and social media in cooperation with other staff in Marketing or the Division.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, Digital Media, Graphic Design, Video or Photography, Public Relations, Social Media Management or related field

Required Related Experience

At least six to eight years of progressively responsible experience in marketing; branding; online marketing strategy; advertising (traditional or digital); video production; social media (paid and organic); or public relations/communications. Four years of those years should include managing teams and/or budgets in these areas.

Desirable Related Experience

Previous experience in higher education desired, but not required. Strong preference given for commercial work in agencies and corporate marketing. Budget acumen. Graphic design or art direction experience helpful.
