Job Summary/Basic Function
Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and per the contract between the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) and MTSU, a dotted line reporting to the Executive State Director of the TSBDC. The Director of the TSBDC at MTSU will oversee the operations, budget, and strategy for the TSBDC at MTSU in compliance with the TSBDC-MTSU Annual Contract and the TSBDC Network Strategic Plan. The incumbent is responsible for the delivery of TSBDC programs to individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the TSBDC at MTSU's 6,800 square mile territory (14 counties in southern middle Tennessee). This includes the Director providing some one-on-one consultation services to individuals and businesses and overseeing service delivery to individuals and businesses by consulting staff. The Director is responsible for effectively delivering services to the stated territory through the primary office in Rutherford County and the satellite office in Maury County. The direct consultation, services, and documentation by the Director to clients should account for approximately 75% of the time of the Director. The additional allocation of time should be spent as follows: The Director participates in and oversees the public outreach of the office and supports the host institution (MTSU) through direct and indirect involvement in University programs such as business plan competitions, placing students for internships, mentoring students, and functioning as a business consulting resource during the internship, experiential learning classes, and Global Entrepreneurship Week. The Director is required to travel throughout the service area and is responsible for establishing relationships with stakeholders in the service area and maintaining existing relationships with stakeholders in the service area. The Director is responsible for ensuring a positive and impactful presence from the TSBDC and MTSU in business communities throughout the territory and perform other related tasks and special projects as assigned. This position is responsible developing and managing an annual budget that includes federal, match, in-kind, indirect, and program income dollars. Note: This is a full-time, grant-funded position with continued employment contingent on annual funding.
Required Education
Master's degree in business administration, economics, finance, or other business-related field required.
Required Related Experience
Five (5) years of progressively responsible business experience required. A Bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, finance, or other business-related field, plus nine (9) years of progressively responsible business experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.
Required License/Registration/Certification
A valid driver's license is required.
Desirable Related Experience
Master's degree in business administration, economics, or related field preferred.
Desirable License/Registration/Certification
SBA certification for international trade is preferred.
