Job Summary/Basic Function

The University College at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for the chair position (#136005) of the Department of University Studies. Applicants must be eligible to meet the criteria for the rank of associate professor or professor. Expedited tenure upon appointment is possible. The start date for the position is August 1, 2023.

The successful candidate will lead a department that offers two undergraduate interdisciplinary degree programs with a B.S in Professional Studies and B.S. in Integrated Studies and one master’s degree in Professional Studies to students electing a broad-based educational experience. Degree programs are offered primarily online and serve working adults. The University Studies Department also serves first-year and transfer students newly admitted to MTSU to determine their ideal academic placement as they transition to the university. Faculty and staff in the University Studies Department are committed to student success and the instruction of prescribed courses in math and reading for underprepared students, as well as first-year experience (FYE) and transfer transition courses. Typically, the chair is expected to teach one course each academic year. Teaching responsibilities will be determined by the candidate’s academic background and skills.

The successful candidate will prioritize excellence in teaching, have a distinguished record of scholarship, and have a strong commitment to equitable student success. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills and actively advocate for diverse student and faculty concerns.

Applicants with experience working with online courses and degree programs, adult students, FYE, and underprepared populations, as well as those with prior administrative experience, student success initiatives, or experience with assessment for learning improvement, will receive special consideration.
