Job Summary/Basic Function
MTSU's College of Liberal Arts seeks a research professor and director for its Forensic Institute for Research and Education (FIRE) who is an internationally recognized forensic scientist with a strong record of scholarship in forensic anthropology. This is a 12 month appointment with a start date as early as July 1, 2021. Applicants must be eligible to meet the criteria for the rank of professor. Position contingent upon funding.
The director will provide leadership in the development and implementation of research, education and community service goals. The director will enthusiastically seek to bring positive regional, national and international attention to FIRE and MTSU through research, forensic activities and partnerships with external organizations, and through the implementation of nationally and internationally accepted standards related to accreditation and certification. The director of FIRE, while housed in the College of Liberal Arts, will strive to bring a forensic emphasis to the university as a whole by working to assist other colleges in forensic endeavors. The successful candidate will seek funding sources to enhance and expand FIRE’s goals and objectives. Responsibilities will include supervising staff, overseeing budgets, and providing support to and direct involvement with campus forensic organizations, such as the Forensic Anthropology Search and Recovery (FASR) Team, and the Middle Tennessee Forensic Science Society (MTFSS). The director will be required to teach one course per semester. The director’s community service will involve educating the public on the forensic sciences through activities, such as the William M. Bass Legends in Forensic Science Lectureship and CSI:MTSU, a summer forensic camp designed to allow high school students to explore the varied career possibilities in forensic science. The director will seek opportunities to provide training in the form of lectures and workshops to forensic science, law enforcement and medico-legal groups at the county, state, and national level. The director will pursue opportunities to provide direct service to law enforcement (such as assisting with skeletal scene processing) and to medical examiners (such as skeletal analysis) in order to provide experiential learning experiences for the FASR team and other university students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Terminal degree in anthropology
Required Related Experience
• A minimum of 10 years of administrative experience in upper-level management within an applied forensic science setting
• A minimum of 5 years of experience working with national and international forensic science organizations
Board Certification by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology
Applicants who have any of the following will receive special consideration:
• Active member within the American Academy of Forensic Sciences as demonstrated by (currently or previously) serving on committees or as an officer.
• Demonstrated ability for securing funding (grants, contracts, and/or philanthropic).
• Demonstrated ability in teaching forensic anthropology and/or forensic sciences at universities and/or forensic workshops.
• Experience in forensic laboratory settings.
• Demonstrated knowledge of diverse forensic science specialties.
• Demonstrated ability to build internal and external partnerships.
• Active membership within national/international forensic-related organizations.
