Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Environmental Health & Safety, serve as the Biology Chemical Hygiene & Radiation Safety Officer. Oversee the safety activities for all laboratories in the new Science building and Science complex. Maintain a Radiation Safety Office which may be contacted 24 hours per day / seven days a week in the event of accident or other abnormal occurrence. Review and approve procedures and documents requiring the attention of the Radiation Safety Officer prior to implementation by University departments. Ensure MTSU is in compliance with all governmental agency required policies, procedures and regulations. Audit records of possession, use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices: audits to include a review of departmental procedures, manuals, logs, emergency plans and other documents relevant to comply with applicable standards. On call 24/7 and perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Educational Qualifications and Field of Study

Bachelor’s degree in health physics, environmental science, chemistry, physics, biology or directly related field required.

Required Year(s) and Type of Work Experience

Five years of progressively responsible experience managing a formal radiation safety program. Certified Health Physicist certification eligibility is required.

Preferred Year(s) and Type of Work Experience

Master’s degree preferred. Five years of professional experience working in a radiation safety program using radioactive materials in a university research laboratory preferred.

Certificates/ Licenses Preferred

SLS (ASCP) certification preferredCertified Health Physicist (CHP) preferred

Salary Range $54,062 - $68,389; commensurate with experience
