Job Description

The Political Economy Research Institute at Middle Tennessee State University invites applications for the position of Director. This is a twelve-month, tenure-track position at the Associate or Professor rank. Tenure upon appointment possible. The position begins as early as November 1, 2017.

MTSU is an R3 institution as classified by the Carnegie Foundation (Doctoral University—Moderate Research Activity), with over 22,000 students, located in Murfreesboro, 35 miles southeast of Nashville, the Tennessee state capital. The university offers, through eight colleges and 39 academic departments, baccalaureate instruction in the liberal and fine arts, the sciences, education, business, media and entertainment, and a variety of other fields. Graduate programs are offered at the master’s, specialist, and doctoral levels. Established in late 2016, the Political Economy Research Institute is a joint venture between the Jennings A. Jones College of Business (www.mtsu.edu/business) and the University Honors College (www.mtsu.edu/honors). The mission of the institute is to engage undergraduate and graduate students with faculty in research that will further the understanding of free market business and economic principles, as well as their impact on regional, national, and international financial conditions and the well-being of society. The Director’s position will be the first hired for the new institute.

The Institute will be housed in the Department of Economics and Finance in the Jones College. The department offers BBA degrees in economics and finance, an MA in Economics, an MS in Finance, and a PhD in Economics. The department also provides support for the MBA program.

The primary area of research/teaching interest desired for the Director is economics, with particular emphasis on public choice theory.

The Director should be an accomplished leader in the academic community. Through teaching, research, service and administration, the Director will provide leadership to the Political Economy Research Institute and energize the campus by attracting national attention to MTSU.

The Director will:
• Engage in innovative, engaged teaching, particularly in the University Honors College;
• Facilitate cutting-edge research that is publishable in major scholarly journals with the potential to impact public policy decisions;
• Organize and host workshops/conferences that attract top scholars studying in areas relevant to the institute;
• Assist in the supervision and evaluation of honors theses;
• Recruit students and faculty for research opportunities funded by the institute;
• Collaborate with educational and professional colleagues in political economy and related fields to foster a stronger connection between these disciplines and MTSU;
• Administer the institute’s budget, human resources, and relationships with other internal and external stakeholders;
• Follow university processes in hiring in order to staff the institute.
• Promote the institute’s activities, in cooperation with the Office of Marketing and Communications, to create a strong national reputation for the institute;
• Collaborate with development personnel and the Office of Research in fundraising, developing grant proposals, and undertaking outreach efforts;
• Provide leadership to help the University fulfill its goals and commitments to quality and to maintaining a student-centered environment.

Required Education

A doctoral degree in economics or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment.
