Job Summary/Basic Function

The Assistant Director (AD) for Research Initiatives provides leadership and oversight of the research lab at the Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). In collaboration with the Chair of Excellence in Dyslexic Studies and the Center Director, the AD for Research will identify short- and long-term goals for the research lab; develop action plans; and provide ongoing coordination, monitoring, and reporting around the achievement of these goals. The AD for Research will ensure compliance with university protocols and serve as the Center’s primary point of contact with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at MTSU.

A primary responsibility for this role is to support the development of a comprehensive research program that contributes to a deeper understanding of dyslexia, including its etiology and neurobiology; risk indicators of dyslexia; identification of characteristics of dyslexia; academic, social-emotional, and behavioral consequences of dyslexia; co-occurring conditions; and effective instruction and interventions for students with dyslexia across different settings. In collaboration with other Center staff, the AD for Research Initiatives will work to advance an awareness of policies and practices that promote reading and writing success for students with characteristics of dyslexia.

As research lab coordinator, the individual in this position is responsible for ensuring a high level of research productivity, resulting in both publications in peer-reviewed, academic journals and translational research products (e.g., white papers, reports, fact sheets) for diverse audiences. In this role, the Assistant Director for Research Initiatives runs regular lab meetings and collaborates with other Center staff, graduate and undergraduate student researchers, MTSU faculty, and external partners, as appropriate, on research projects. The AD is also encouraged to pursue his/her/their own independent line of research related to the study and treatment of dyslexia.

In addition to these responsibilities, the Assistant Director for Research Initiatives works closely with the Chair of Dyslexic Studies, Center Director, Assistant Director for Educational Services and School Outreach, and Assistant Director for Clinical Services to develop and execute projects and activities that advance the Center’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities. This includes actively participating in the Center’s team-based approach to student evaluation (i.e., conducting student evaluations, analyzing student data and writing reports, leading parent interviews and feedback sessions, and serving on the case review team); creation of professional development content for pre-service and in-service educators; development of resources for educators, families, and other groups; planning and implementation of events, workshops, and conferences; and other special projects.
